1. Stay Warm, Inside and Out
It might sound obvious, but maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature is crucial. The NHS recommends that living rooms are kept at around 21°C and bedrooms at 18°C. This isn't just about comfort; it helps to prevent health issues like a cold, flu, or even more serious problems like hypothermia.
Make Your Home a Sanctuary: Use draught excluders on doors and windows, and consider thermal curtains to keep the warmth in.
Layer Up: Encourage wearing several thin layers of clothing rather than one thick one. A good woolly jumper, warm socks, and a cosy blanket are your best friends.
Keep Moving: Simple chair-based exercises or a gentle walk around the house can help generate body heat and improve circulation.
2. Don’t Let Falls Catch You Out
Icy pavements and wet leaves can make a simple trip outside a real hazard. In fact, falls are a major cause of injury for older adults. But the risks aren't just outdoors. Slippery floors and poor lighting inside can also be a problem.
Mind the Gaps: Make sure rugs are secure and there are no loose wires.
Brighten Up: Ensure all areas of the home, especially hallways and staircases, are well-lit. Motion-activated lights can be a great addition.
Check Your Feet: Sturdy, non-slip footwear is essential both inside and out.

3. Eat Well and Stay Hydrated
Winter can sometimes reduce our appetites or our motivation to cook, but proper nutrition is vital for keeping our immune systems strong.
Think Warm Meals: Soups, stews, and hot porridge are not only comforting but can be packed with vegetables and nutrients.
Keep Sipping: It's easy to forget to drink enough water when it's cold, but hydration is just as important in winter as it is in summer. Warm herbal tea or hot water with a slice of lemon can be a great alternative.
4. The Power of Human Connection
Winter can be a lonely time for many, with shorter days and a reluctance to go out. The combination of cold weather and reduced social contact can have a significant impact on mental wellbeing.
Reach Out: A simple phone call, a friendly visit from a neighbour, or a video chat with a grandchild can make all the difference.
Community is Key: Look for local community centres or groups that offer activities. Even a short trip to the local shops or a café can be a positive change of scenery.
